NaBloPoMo 30 - Wordless Wednesday - Little Blue Penguins

This is supposed to be Wordless but I'm going to twist the words a bit and make it Word - less.

Recently the Little Blue Penguins were affected by the oil spill in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand when the Rena was stranded and after loving care were released back into the sea - Little Blue Penguins waddle to freedom

Something cute to watch Jumpers for the Little Blue Penguins.
Little Blue Penguins are being sold at Skeinz.

NaBloPoMo 28 - Pouwhenua Wai-titi Landing (place of shining waters)

Pouwhenua, meaning land post, are carved, wooden posts or fighting staffs used by Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. They are wooden posts that mark territorial boundaries or places of significance.

These pictures are of the Wai-titi Landing (place of shining waters) Pouwhenua outside the Parliament grounds in Wellington.

These Pouwhenua are positioned on what was once the foreshore of Wellington's harbour.

NaBloPoMo 26 - FMTSO - Lawn Tools

This week's theme at Friday My Town Shoot Out is Lawn Tools.

I have someone come and mow my grass as gardening is not one of my strengths or passions. Unfortunately he didn't come this week so have only this pic - the garden hose that I own. Not very exciting but a theme is a theme.

So instead I thought I might share some garden hose trivia ....

Taken from Wellington City Council Water Restrictions
Wellington has year round restrictions on sprinklers and garden hoses. Use is only allowed 6.00am - 8.00am and 7.00pm - 9.00pm on alternate days. If you have an even-numbered address, you can use sprinklers on even days of the month and vice versa. A hand-held hose or watering can may be used at any time.

Taken from Garden History Trivia

          Q. When was the first garden hose made?
          A.  around 400BC of ox gut

NaBloPoMo 25 - Thursday Challenge Soft - OSCAR and TEDDY

Oscar and Teddy are the stars of this week's Thursday Challenge theme of "Soft"

Oscar is my friend's absolutely gorgeous, soft and cuddly spaniel. On a ride home with my friend some time ago, Oscar sat in the back of the car and looked at me with his puppy eyes for most of the way (so cute). Occasionally he stuck his paws on the window and gazed out.

Teddy is from Kirkcaldie and Stains - all proceeds from sales of Teddy went to the Wellington Free Ambulance. Teddy's fur is just like Oscars - very, very soft.

And Koala is also very soft and cuddly.

NaBloPoMo 24 - ABC Wednesday - S is for

S is this week's letter at ABC Wednesday

Snow covered mountains in Sepia for Sepia Scenes

Sea, Sand and Seagull

Stained glass window at the Dunedin Railway Station

Socks - On 30 June this year I volunteered to peg some red socks to break the world record for the longest clothesline of socks.

It was sponsored by the Sir Peter Blake Trust and Westpac.

We were pegging those socks in the howling wind, horizontal rain and the cold. But efforts paid off. We did it. A new world record.

Check it out at Red Socks World Record

NaBloPoMo 21 - Scenic Sunday - Somes Island

Matiu / Somes Island is a beautiful nature reserve and historic site situated in the Wellington Harbour.

It was formerly an enemy alien internment camp and quarantine station and opened to the general public as a nature reserve and historic site in 1995.

The island has been eradicated of pests since 1981 and has become a sanctuary for native plants, birds, reptiles and invertebrates.

It is also provides safe habitat for the world's smallest penguin - little penguin or korora or little blue penguin - during their nesting season.

(Information taken from Department of Conservation - Maitu/Somes Island)

Here are my  pics of Somes Island. (click on pics to enlarge)
