Wellington Central Library

Thinking like an architect isn't easy!

This morning my son and I sat down after breakfast to talk about his assignment for Uni. He has to design a monument so we were throwing about some ideas together.

Some architectural feats are quite amazing to look at but so much of creative and logical thinking goes into it.

I am a logical thinker so the logic side of it comes easy - is this viable, is this symmetrical, is this sturdy etc etc.

But creative thinking - that was quite an eye opener for me - thinking in terms of what I want the viewer to imagine and experience and not taking a topic or idea in it's literal sense - all very confusing. Thinking like an architect is definitely not easy for me.

And as we're on the topic of architecture, my words this week for 6 Word Saturday ties in very nicely with the Thursday Photo Challenge prompt of "Modern" (Contemporary, Fashionable, Architecture, Interiors, Advanced, Cool,...)

So here it is ... The Wellington Central Library - Modern Architecture - quite interesting to look at.

Also showcasing this for Sunday's in my city

Not sure what the architect was thinking or what he wanted us to imagine - but I always think of water when I look at the building - bluish colour, bands and the curve.

Modern Architecture nestled among the old.

  1. Hi Suzy ~~ Best wishes on hubby's project. You did your part good for finding some modern arcitecture. We like the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, it was very modern. We also like the Botanical Museum, not so modern. Today we are in London, U.K.

What is the peak-like structure at the end of the wall in the first photo just above your watermark?

    1. It sure is Vidya - it's bright and airy so makes it even more appealing. Not sure what that structure is - the next time I visit there will check it out.

  14. Creating beautiful architectures is to evoke the Brahma in you...People these days have great talent and had built up some extra-ordinary masterpieces, sometimes combining the essence of the past and the present...I personally would like to go with the traditional age-old architecture, which can stand out with its customary design in this modernized society...

  19. this is a cool building.. I too remembered water. Architecture always reminds me of my office buildings which were in shape of titanic or a pyramid so on so forth.. Credit goes to world famous Hafeez contractors.

    1. Thanks Irene. It's a tough subject but once mastered it must be truly satisfying. I'm waiting for my son to design something I can point to and say - My son designed that!

  22. It looks lovely, but I somehow didn't like the effect of it being squeezed against other buildings! There should have been a wide open lawn in front of a building like that!

    1. It's actually part of the civic square so there are a lot of building around - like the town hall etc. And it is a wide open area. The buildings at the back are really across the street.

  25. I think I would find it hard to study architecture as it is such a blend of right and left brain skills. Creative, spatial thinking on the right, and logical problem solving on the left. Good luck to your son.

I like the look of this modern building with the curves and the glass facade. Not all modern architecture grabs me and I tend to favour the old styles.

I have learned quite a bit about landscape architecture over the years since hubby's dad and sister are landscape architects. They learn much the same stuff that an architect learns but with that emphasis on the landscape and spaces. Often they work with regular architects on projects.

I find it quite interesting to learn about how the landscape architect designs a space for people to not only use but to feel a part of and interact with. Must be a great feeling to design something and leave it as your legacy.

    1. Thanks Cathy. Me too - I like the old architecture more than the modern stuff but some new buildings look amazing. this is one of those. So true to see something you've designed come to life. Waiting for my son to finish studying and design something.
